nature in Hakkoda

Mt. Hakkoda consists of several peaks, including Mt. Odake and Mt. Akakuradake, and is home to pristine wildlife. It takes on different faces in tune with each season with beautiful colors of fresh foliage in spring, deep greens in summer, autumn leaves, and then a white, snow-covered landscape in winter.

Hakkoda is a major hot spring area in Aomori-prefecture. Sukayu Hot Spring is known for Fukashi-yu, a steam bath used to rejuvenate the body; its sennin-buro (a bath for 1000-people), made completely of Japanese cypress and equivalent in size to 160 tatami mats; and Kodakara-no-yu, a bath said to be good for one’s fertility. From the Jogakura and Kansuizawa hot springs, a stretch of virgin beech forest can be seen through the steam, and both of these baths are located reasonably closely to Hakkoda Ropeway, a popular skiing resort.
