Aomori, a mountainous prefecture on the coast, is at the northernmost tip of Honshu Island. The annual Aomori Nebuta Festival in Aomori city, the center of the prefecture, is renowned throughout Japan and the world. This summer festival is designated as a significant intangible folk cultural asset of Japan. At the festival, more than 20 large lantern floats depicting human figures are paraded through city streets. These floats are called nebuta.
